From the Foreman's Desk - March Update

Last year, Remi and I married in March, almost one year ago!
Anyway, wedding prep and moving into the tiny house didn't leave much time for a big garden plan.
Thankfully, I could still use my green thumb with my handy dandy raised beds! It was nice to have fresh lettuce, snap peas, okra, and other yummy garden veggies available throughout the busy summer months.
But this year, I've had lots of time to plan a much bigger garden with hopes of canning and or preserving the goodies for the winter months.
I try to do as little disturbance as possible. I'm not quite no-till, but I try to do the best I can to keep the soil and all its little friends happy and alive. For me, that usually looks like one till in early spring and nice coverings of mulch throughout the spring and summer to keep weeds at bay. Of course, I still have to pull some weeds as well.
I enjoy reading about new gardening techniques and giving them a try! There is so much out there to research.
This year, I am utilizing the pigs to turn over the soil I'm going to plant in. They'll leave their manure and leftover hay as well.
After they leave, I'll add some compost and more hay/straw. My garden is always a work in progress and far from perfect, but I love gardening so much and can't wait to get my hands in the soil.
Since I'll have a bigger garden this year, I decided to move my raised beds closer to the farmhouse. I'm going to plant some turnips, strawberries, and, later on, cucumbers!
Of course, the goats always love to "help" us out with farm projects. Pretty soon, they'll go in some electric netting in the pasture, so they don't eat my plants like last year!
I know the joke in the Midwest is if you don't like the weather wait a day, and it'll change. That couldn't have been more true this week. Crazy how one day I was working in a sweatshirt and beanie, and now it's snowing!
Oh well, spring will come when it comes!
So long for now,
Kaitlyn
